Tom has experience across a broad range of professional indemnity, personal injury, public liability and workers compensation matters. He has a particular interest in the defence of medical malpractice claims, and holds a senior position in the health law and medical malpractice team.

Tom regularly appears in various Courts and Tribunals on behalf of his clients, including as Counsel in the Coroner’s jurisdiction. His experience includes a number of years at the Crown Solicitor’s Office, acting on behalf of the South Australian Government Financing Authority (SAFA) and major Government Departments such as SA Health, SA Police and Correctional Services.

Tom has defended medical malpractice claims with complex indemnity issues, and provided generalised risk management advice as required. His experience at the Crown Solicitor’s Office included defending litigation claims against public hospitals and SA Health employees, and acting for Government Departments and employees in the Coroner’s jurisdiction. The litigation matters he had conduct of included investigating and providing advice on birth notification claims, claims with catastrophic personal injury and claims involving multiple country hospitals and multifaceted apportionment issues. Several of these matters have been high profile, complex and involved culturally sensitive issues.

Tom has acted for various Government departments in claims under the Return to Work Act, including Section 18 disputes, successfully negotiating redemption agreements and lump sum payments, and Section 66 recoveries.

Tom prides himself on providing clear, concise and pragmatic advice to his clients, and working closely with those clients to achieve positive resolutions and outcomes.
